Biography
Nagaswami Vasan, D.V.M., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine in the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Master of Science in Nutrition and Doctoral training in Neurochemistry from Madras University, India. He received his post-doctoral training at School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where he was also a junior faculty for two years before joining UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in 1977. Between 1977-1996 funded by NIH and other agencies, he conducted research delineating the role of extracellular matrix in vertebral chondrogenesis and limb development. He has published numerous peer reviewed research articles and reviews in prestigious journals, book chapters, and meeting presentations. He has been an invited speaker at many national and international forums. Since his appointment at NJMS, he has been teaching and directing gross anatomy to medical, dental, graduate, post-graduate and allied health students. Since 1996, he has become heavily involved in medical education and curriculum development. He served on many curriculum committees either as a member or as chair, and served as Assistant Dean for Education for couple of years. Currently, he is involved in conducting both classroom and pedagogical research, which he presents at national and international meetings and publishes regularly. He also serves as scientific reviewer for number of journals, and serves on editorial board of number of books. He has received several teaching and service awards such as the Golden Apple, Deans and UMDNJ-Foundations awards, and travel awards from International academic societies. In 2000 he was inducted as a faculty in the New Jersey Medical School Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Vasan was inducted as a charter member of the UMDNJ Master Educators' Guild in 2000 and served as its President during 2003-2004.
