Biography
Dr. Michael E. Chansky is Associate Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden. He received his MD at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1980 and was awarded AOA. He trained in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and served as Chief Resident. From 1984-85 he was an Instructor in Medicine at RWJMS/Camden, teaching primarily EM and Medicine. At the conclusion of his Chief Resident year, he was recognized with the prestigious Donna McCurdy House Staff Teaching Award. In July of 1985 he returned to RWJMS/Camden as an Assistant Professor, and accepted the position to direct EM at the Cooper Health System. In 1985 the ED had an annual volume of 25,000 patients, 7 full time physicians and no scholarly activity. There are currently 19 full time faculty, including Divisions of Pediatrics and Research, a full time PhD and annual census of 47,000. The EM residency program has full accreditation for 5 years, and graduated its first class in 1999. There has been significant growth in the Department's scholarly activity and grant acquisition, including a recent $836,803 NIH K-23 award. His teaching commitment has been recognized with two Department of Medicine teaching awards, 8 RWJMS/Camden teaching awards, two nominations for a UMDNJ Excellence Award for "Distinguished Service in Education" in addition to being invited three times to recite the Hippocratic Oath at Convocation. In 1999 he was nominated to Honorary Membership in the RWJMS Alumni Society. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Research interests include administration and innovative education techniques, and he has authored several chapters in authoritative EM textbooks. In 1997 RWJMS established the 54th Department of EM, and named him Chair in 2000.
